The most ‘basic feature’ of a smartphone, namely the ability to capture voice, has an amazingly powerful application – the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease!
Parkinson’s disease is a highly debilitating and progressive disease of unknown cause. Importantly, diagnosis is costly and time consuming, and often not performed.
As Max Little explains in the following TED video, a short phone call can provide sufficient data to make a diagnosis with 99% accuracy. Recently 10,000 people called in to record their voices and these recordings are now being analyzed – see http://www.parkinsonsvoice.org/.
